Book Review

Remember this post?  Where I began a study book called Women in and Alien Land?
Well I finally finished it. I liked the history in the first part. The explanations of what the laws were and how they were used. I liked how it was connected to Christ's redemption of us. The Ruth part was really good.
Though the fact that Miss Bos used her own translation of the scriptures and not a real Bible one gave me pause at first. I did not find significant differences between what she said and my KJV or NIV but I do not like single person translations. Not enough objectivity in them.
Over all the Ruth section though was a good read.

I was not so pleased with the Ester part. It is Miss Bos's assertion that because God is not mentioned, the text is fiction. She says this because the Song of Solomon is also fiction and does not mention God... I do not agree. That is a moot point I suppose but it seems to be presumptuous to make such declarations. It also seems to give her license to assert things and to add on to the story. Because she views it as fiction she wrote several extra "study helps" to be used in cadence with the Bible version. A view from a maid and so forth.

While I know God uses stories to teach, I think  of the old testament as historical. I guess it bothers me when folks rewrite history. I mean, I have not done in depth research into whether or not the events happened as stated, but I feel there is some historic basis for them.

Overall, the book is good, but you have to be diligent to study your Bible along with her interpretations. This is nothing new the Bereans were praised for studying what Paul said was true.
As in all things, measure this book against the Bible.

Have a blessed Sunday ladies!
