It isn't a bad day. Just an I don't want to do anything day. I can not follow up on that of course.
Yesterday was sort of busy. I got order restored mostly in the kitchen. Washed fabric. Organized part of my fabric shelf. Did part of the grocery shopping, then crashed.
Today I am just lazy. My throat is still trying to be sore from allergies. My nose alternates from drip to plugged. My eyes feel the pressure and combined it all makes me want to go back to bed.
However, I have laundry to do, a bathroom to clean, meat to process so I can freeze it...at some point I also need to go exchange an item I bought yesterday, and hit HEB for the rest of the groceries.
I am working on a grocery stock up. I got about 60 lbs of meat yesterday, Today I plan to get frozen veggies, canned goods, spice and non food items.
I was going to order the little grocery's freezer pack, for $129. Then I began doing math. I hate math
but in this case it had to be done. The freezer pack gave 42 lb of meat. which equaled $3.07 a pound. In general I try to stay around $2 a pound. So in the ad I looked at what they had. Chicken Breast was $1.99, pork roast was .99, ribs were $1.39, Round roast was $1.99. Ground steak was $2.59 for the lean stuff. So I spent $102 and got 60 lbs of meat instead of $129 for 42 lbs. That equaled about $1.70 per lb, much better!
I did splurge and got some frozen shrimp and fish sticks (we really like them) while in town. I had coupons for most of the shrimp items. so that added another $20, but i still got about 30 more pounds of meat for my $122. so...after that my per lb went up to $1.87, still better than $3.07.
Today I go to HEB for some fresh veggie, ranch beans, pasta, flour and so on. I think I have coupons for most of it. My goal is to have stuff on hand to think ahead on meals. I would like to have a rotation of 15 or so family favorites to use over a months time. I now have at least the meat for that idea. I will buy stuff that is good on sale when I have extra cash, but my hope is that I will not have to shop as much for as much. This trip may wait until Monday. I kinda want it done though so i van begin the menu making. To meet this goal I am spending more than normal this month on groceries. My entire check this week, plus some will go into setting this up. In the long term though I think money will be saved.
We also are planning and in fact have begun a large garden. The seeds in the house are doing great. I found some sprouting garlic in the kitchen so plopped it in a container of soil on the porch. If it looks like it will grow I will find a place for a bed of it in the yard.
Oh and the roast the other night was wonderful. The recipe is simple, about 5 lbs of roast, a bottle of coke (I use Mexican coke, it has no corn syrup) a can of mushroom soup and an envelope of lipton onion soup mix. That's it, put it all in the crock pot for about 8 hours and you are on the way to a fantastic dinner. I made garlic mashed potatoes and glazed baby carrots. We got some ciabatta rolls too.
Well now I am hungry and need to eat some breakfast. I got a free coupon for Kashi heart to heart, they have a blueberry cereal, no corn syrup and i LOVE it! Almost enough to buy it with out coupons...
You did great on your meat purchases, Mel. Those prices are very good. I have found, too, that the package deals aren't really such a deal once you dissect it. But, the convenience of being able to get everything in a bundle appeals to so many. Good for you for doing your homework ~ math homework, even! Heehee!
ReplyDeleteI received that Kashi coupon, too. Thanks for the heads up about the blueberry cereal. We'll give it a try. Did you get all the $1.50 coupons, as well? Combined with an occasional sale, we may be able to get some more at a decent price.
J, the price on it at HEB after coupon is $1.33 a box, not bad for cereal i can eat!
